Latvia as a whole is known far less than its capital, Riga, or the most popular resort city of Jurmala. But Riga and Jurmala are just a small part of the beauty that will open before the eyes of a traveler who has decided to travel inland. Knightly castles, palaces of barons and small manor houses remained throughout Latvia. Jelgava, the capital of the Duchy of Courland, or Rundale Castle, the work of the famous architect Rastrelli, the summer residence of the favorite of the Russian Empress Anna Ioannovna of the Duchy of Courland of Biron, is all worth it.
In Cēsis, the ruins of the ancient Livonian castle are preserved. In the latter, by the way, medieval festivals are regularly held with knightly tournaments and archer tournaments, theatrical performances and tasting of medieval dishes.
